I woke up not knowing what to expect. My days in the mansion had been hard and strange. Staring in the mirror was the only thing that assured me I remained human. My eyes were still a cool blue. My skin still human-like, but I didn’t understand why my hearing was so acute. If I focused hard enough, I could hear people talking on the other side of the mansion. One time I heard Venna talking to Charlie about P. Mav and something about an ancient organization that had known about vampires for centuries, about how this organization had been rich and powerful throughout history and was secretly orchestrating politics. They were like the puppet masters of the politicians.
Venna spoke of how they’d waited for the return of the vampires, and once they’d learned of Venna some sixty years ago, they’d helped her build P. Mav. I wondered how many people Venna had made into vampires within this organization.
Now, Venna walked into the room dressed in her school clothes. With her finger, she motioned me to follow her. We walked to her red sports car, got in, and she drove me to school.
I didn’t go to our hangout. Matter of fact, I ignored the willow tree altogether, and I avoided Nox and Tiff. In class, I didn’t think about anything in particular, but something tugged at the front of my mind. It prodded at me as if I would remember at any moment. There was something I wanted to find out. What was it? It felt like my thoughts swarmed in a fog, as if information were right in front of me but hidden by the thick mist. Oh, well.
When I walked into math class, I saw Michael sitting at his desk. Michael . . . Michael . . . almost got it. Nope, I just couldn’t remember. I wanted to remember something Michael had said. I think it was something he’d said at the mansion with Venna, but as hard as I strained my thoughts, I just couldn’t remember. When Michael glanced up at me, surprise flashed over his face, and then it disappeared.
I sat down and slipped him a sideways stare. His leg bounced up and down, and he rapped his fingers on the edge of his desk. Then he reached into his pocket, pulled out folded up pieces of paper, and handed them to me. I went to place them in my handbag, planning to read them after class, but curiosity got the best of me. I unfolded the papers. Within the pages were more details of his world and his past.
